Terms of Use

The short version: it's free, use it for whatever you like including paid work, but it comes with no warranty and you use it at your own risk. Don't resell it or pass it off as your own. There's a plain-English explanation of each of those below.
1. Who these terms are with
Smartshow LMS is made and provided by Lee James Apps (a trading name of Lee James), United Kingdom — "I" or "me" below. By downloading or using the software, or using this website, you accept these terms.
2. Your licence to use it
Smartshow LMS is free of charge. You may install it on as many machines as you like, and use it for personal or commercial work — paid gigs, installations, events, rental stock, whatever you do with it. No licence key, no account, no per-seat fee, no royalty on anything you produce with it.
Anything you create with the software — your shows, projects, pixel maps, scripts and shaders — is entirely yours. I claim no rights over your work.
3. What you may not do
The software is not open source. Copyright in it stays with me. So please don't:
- sell it, rent it, or charge anyone for the software itself;
- redistribute modified copies, or repackage it as your own product;
- remove or alter its branding to pass it off as something else;
- decompile or reverse engineer it, except where the law expressly permits that regardless of what these terms say.
Sharing the download link is welcome and encouraged — please just point people at this website rather than mirroring the installers elsewhere, so everyone gets the current version.
Any of the above can be agreed separately. If you want to resell, bundle or white-label Smartshow LMS — ship it inside a product, supply it to clients as part of a system you licence, or put it on hardware you sell — that is available under a commercial licence agreed directly with me. Email lee@leejamesapps.co.uk. To be clear, this is only about selling or supplying the software itself: simply using it on paid work needs no licence and no permission.
4. No warranty
The software is provided "as is", with no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. I do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with any particular hardware, controller, fixture or network.
5. Live use — read this one properly
Smartshow LMS drives lighting for live events. Software fails, computers crash, networks drop packets and USB cables get kicked out. You are responsible for your own show. Test your rig fully before an audience is in the room, keep a fallback for anything safety-critical, and do not rely on this — or any single piece of software — where failure could cause injury, damage, or a serious loss.
The software is not designed or certified for any safety-critical, life-safety, medical, industrial-control or emergency-lighting application, and must not be used for one.
6. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, I am not liable for any loss of profit, loss of business, loss of contracts, loss or corruption of data, wasted expenditure, or any indirect or consequential loss arising from use of the software or this website — including any failure during a live event.
Because the software is supplied free of charge, my total liability to you for all claims is limited to £0, being the amount you paid for it.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer, this does not affect your statutory rights.
7. Support and updates
There is no guaranteed support, response time, or commitment to future updates. In practice bugs do get fixed and new versions do appear — the forum and bug tracker are the place to report things, and reports are read. But none of that is a contractual promise.
Nothing installs itself. The application will tell you when a newer version is available; downloading and installing it is always your choice.
8. Third-party components and hardware
Smartshow LMS is built on open-source components, including Electron and Node.js, each under its own licence. Protocol names and hardware brands — Art-Net, sACN, ENTTEC, NDI, Jinx! and others — belong to their respective owners and are used descriptively for compatibility. Mention of any hardware does not imply endorsement by, or affiliation with, its manufacturer.
9. This website
I try to keep it accurate but make no promise that it is complete or up to date, and it may be changed or taken down at any time. External links are provided for convenience; I am not responsible for other people's websites.
10. Changes to these terms
These terms may change. The date at the top will change with them, and continuing to use the software means accepting the current version.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction — except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK, you may also bring proceedings in your own jurisdiction.
